Snapper Directory Comparison Utility

Snapper scans a disk or folder, creating a "snapshot" of the dates, times, sizes and other properties of the files it finds. This snapshot can be saved, and used to produce reports of changes* that are subsequently made to those files.
Snapshots don't have to be created from the same source; you can choose to compare a hard-disk with a CD, a server volume with a Zip disk, or a diskette with a subdirectory. You can compare snapshots taken from different "root" directories too, just tell Snapper which branches you're interested in and it shows you where the differences are.
The familiar Explorer-style interface is easy to use and the results are easy to see. Missing files, modified files, and folders containing changes are all highlighted. You can choose to display only those files that are new, or changed, and you can see all files in subfolders too. Click a folder name on the first snapshot and the same folder is selected in the second. Scroll down the list of files and the other snapshot scrolls too, allowing you to see exactly what changed - instantly.
Take a few moments to look at the Online Tour and you'll see just how easy Snapper is to use.
You can sort and print the results of your comparison, or export them to a file. Snapper will automatically number your snapshot files so that you can keep an accurate history of all changes.
Snapper is fast, scanning a hard-disk with 50,000 files in about 12 seconds (Pentium 1.6GHz with 128Mb RAM). You can choose to ignore certain file properties (such as the Archive flag) when comparing snapshots, and if you also use file comparison software (such as WinDiff) then you can configure Snapper to run it automatically whenever you double-click on a filename.
* please note that for reasons of speed, Snapper only records the timestamp, size, flags and (optionally) version number of the files, it does not scan the contents of each file!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Q. What is the maximum number of files and folders that Snapper can handle in a single snapshot?
A. There is no defined limit, this depends on a number of factors including the length of file/path names, how much memory you have on your system, other open applications, etc. It has been tested with 350,000 entries and, although the Compare option will take several minutes to complete, it is able to take, save and load very large snapshots indeed. However, it is usually better to have serveral small snapshots instead of one large.
Q. Where is the option to "Show Files/Dirs NOT in this Snapshot"?
A. There is no view called "Files NOT in this Snapshot" - because these are the files that are shown when you select "Files Only in this Snapshot" from the other snapshot's view bar!!
